Antoine, a wood-sculpted maître-d, welcomes patrons and guests onto the new outdoor deck at Surf Club on Fort Myers Beach. Antoine began as a practical joke by some friends of Surf Club owner Bruce Cermak who took the armless statue and placed it outside his restaurant more than a year ago. Cermak had the last laugh when he had a local sculptor affix arms and a surfboard serving tray and made Antoine a mascot for Surf Club.
The new outdoor eating space was completed in late February and adds 32-35 more seats with views of the canal to the rear. It will serve as the host site to a ribbon-cutting celebration tomorrow at 2 p.m. Mayor Larry Kiker plans to ceremonially cut the ribbon on the 1,000-square-foot addition to the popular island eatery.

And it all starts with a parade.
For an hour and a half, a colorful menagerie of clowns, floats, cloggers, music and more will wind its way down Estero Boulevard as beads and candy fly through the air to the screaming crowds who will line up as many as ten deep on the sidewalks to take part in the fun. The honorary parade marshal for this year's Shrimp Parade is none other than beloved community supporter and owner of the Surf Club Bruce Cermak. The Lions told us that they are thrilled to give a little back to Bruce of what he gives to his neighbors all year.
"He has been a long time supporter of the Lions and we wanted to thank him for all the support he gives us by letting him be in the limelight for a day!” said Parade Chairman, Lion Diane Clifton.

The Surf Club Re-opens
(Excerpt from Island Sand Paper, Issue #445)
by - Keri Hendry Walking into the new Surf Club feels like revisiting an old friend, one that has gone through a few upgrades, that is. The building that once housed the Waffle House has gone through a remarkable transformation under long-time Surf Club owner and well-loved local Bruce Cermak, and the soft blue lights, beautiful mural, cool air and freshly stained bar give the place a feeling of home - quite fitting in order to continue the tradition of being The Neighborhood Bar on the Beach. We spoke with Cermak on Tuesday, while he was waiting for his final permits to hopefully open this weekend. He told us about the positive responses he's received from his neighbors and the Town about the Surf Club's move across the street.
